Skills for Life

AIM

To improve the literacy and numeracy skills of offenders.

WHO

Offenders who are identified as having a basic skills need through basic skills screenings and assessments and/or who score one or more on section 4.7 of OASys.

 

WHAT

Literacy and numeracy training can be delivered as part of Supervision Requirement, Unpaid Work Requirement or Licence.

HOW

• Indication of need through a basic skills screening at the report stage.
• Identification of need through a basic skills assessment with the results included in the sentence plan.
• Referral to the PSO leading on basic skills.
• PSO leading on basic skills to arrange literacy and numeracy training with community providers delivering services at Probation offices.
• Provision to be individually focussed.
• Follow specified training towards the achievement of a basic skills award.
• Provision to be individually focussed within a group or one to one delivery.
• Delivery to be available through the medium of Welsh.
• Delivery to meet the needs of ethnic speaking learners.
• Services to meet the assessment and delivery needs of offenders with dyslexia.


NEXT STEP

At the report stage indicate that planned work will occur to address basic skills deficits.

At sentence planning refer to the PSO leading on basic skills.
